A Greek Air Force F-16 fighter jet made an emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport on Thursday after developing a serious technical malfunction during a training mission, with dramatic footage showing the aircraft engulfed in flames shortly after touching down. The pilot escaped unharmed, while firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control.

The aircraft, assigned to the 335th Squadron of the 116th Combat Wing based at Araxos Air Base in western Greece, had been participating in a routine training flight when the emergency unfolded. After the pilot reported the malfunction, the decision was made to divert to the nearest suitable airport on the Ionian island of Zakynthos.

Videos recorded by witnesses showed thick smoke and flames rising from the fighter after it landed, while airport emergency crews rushed onto the runway with firefighting vehicles. Foam and water were used to extinguish the fire within minutes, preventing it from spreading further.

The Hellenic Air Force confirmed that the pilot was not injured and safely exited the aircraft following the emergency landing. Authorities have not yet released the exact cause of the malfunction, and an official investigation has been launched to determine what led to the incident.

As a precaution, Zakynthos International Airport temporarily suspended flight operations while emergency personnel secured the area and engineers inspected the runway for possible damage. Because the airport operates with a single runway during one of Greece’s busiest tourist periods, several commercial flights experienced delays while the aircraft was removed and safety checks were completed.

Emergency response at the airport

Airport firefighters were already on standby as the fighter approached, allowing them to respond immediately after the aircraft came to a stop. Their rapid intervention prevented the flames from causing more extensive damage and helped ensure the safety of airport staff and nearby facilities. Officials later said inspections would determine when normal operations could fully resume.

Investigation underway

Military authorities are now examining the aircraft to establish what caused the emergency. Initial reports indicate the incident stemmed from a technical failure during the training flight, although investigators have not confirmed whether it involved the engine, landing gear, or another critical system. The findings are expected to help determine whether additional inspections or operational measures are required for the fleet.

Despite the dramatic scenes on the runway, the successful emergency landing and the pilot’s safe escape prevented what could have been a far more serious accident, highlighting both the pilot’s training and the rapid response of airport emergency services.
