Greece’s Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos announced that supermarket shelf prices will remain frozen throughout the two summer months, following an expanded meeting at the Maximos Mansion chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The meeting brought together representatives from the food industry and supermarket sector, as the government seeks to address the cost of living and continued pressure on Greek households.

According to Theodorikakos, business representatives committed to keeping prices fully stable during the summer with no new increases on supermarket shelves.

Government links move to easing global inflation pressures

Theodorikakos said the normalization of the situation in the Middle East is helping stabilize oil prices and ease international inflationary pressures that had intensified in recent months. “Addressing the issue of the cost of living and high prices for many of our fellow citizens is unquestionably a top priority for the government as a whole and for the Prime Minister,” the Minister said.

He added that the government expects the easing of international pressures to be reflected in product prices during the summer.

Cuts on 2,000 products to remain through summer

Theodorikakos also stated the price freeze will apply to two thousand product codes that had already seen price reductions of six percent in recent months.

Those reductions, he said, resulted from the strict enforcement of the emergency profit cap measure imposed by the government. The business community has committed to maintaining the six percent reductions on those two thousand product codes throughout the summer, the minister added.

Greece plans broader cuts to supermarket prices in September

Theodorikakos said preparations are underway for what he described as a “national social agreement,” expected to begin in early September. The initiative will aim to deliver substantial price reductions on basic consumer goods widely used by the average Greek household.

“Our goal is to protect consumers,” Theodorikakos said. The Minister also reminded the public that the emergency profit cap measure is set to expire on June 30.
