Beachgoers and boaters in Theologos, located in the North Euboean Gulf in Greece, were treated to an incredible spectacle on Sunday afternoon, when a whale about thirty feet big (9 meters) was spotted swimming in the area.
Locals out on boats looking for a quick getaway in the North Euboean Gulf immediately noticed the massive marine mammal. One group managed to film the encounter from a safe distance, capturing the sheer size of the whale.
According to lamiareport.gr, the boaters realized the whale was actually larger than their own 26-foot vessel. The mammal’s blowhole is clearly visible in the footage.

Whales in the waters of Greece
While the waters off Theologos are quite deep, this is the first time a marine mammal of this size has been spotted in the area. If it is indeed a sperm whale, this marks a unique, first-of-its-kind sighting for the entire Euboean Gulf.
Whales do inhabit the Mediterranean Sea, although their populations are small, and they are typically found only at great depths where food is more abundant. While these marine mammals have occasionally become disoriented and followed large ships into shallower waters, it has never happened before in the Euboean Gulf.
Generally, when such incidents are recorded in enclosed seas, it indicates that the whale may be disoriented and needs assistance with being guided back to the deep, safe waters essential for its survival.
