Renowned Greek director Yannis Smaragdis weighed in on the controversy surrounding Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Odyssey casting black actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.

Smaragdis, whose most recent movie “Kapodistrias” became a box office hit in Greece, suggested that casting Nyong’o is a strategic move to secure Oscar nominations, while simultaneously defending artistic freedom.

“An artist of Nolan’s caliber has the right to do whatever he wants, provided his intentions are pure. Mr. Musk, however, has claimed that Nolan is doing this for other reasons.”

He was referring to the criticisms leveled by Elon Musk who joined the public outcry targeting the casting of Lupita Nyong’o. Musk suggested the move was a cynical grab for accolades, stating Nolan chose her simply because he “wants the awards.”

Smaragdis noted: “The Oscar regulations now require inclusion in two specific categories: LGBTQ+ representation or immigrant themes. Nolan, being a sharp man, does not want to be excluded from the awards. If this casting choice was made purely for that reason, it is despicable.”

Smaragdis: Our heritage does not originate from Africa

The Greek director went on to allege foreign interference, stating: “This is the second time foreign interests have tried to convince us that our sacred heritage originates from Africa. In the past, they claimed Aphrodite was Black. If Nolan is operating under this mindset, it constitutes a hostile act and a deception of the Greek people.”

Turning his attention to EKOMED (the Greek National Center for Audiovisual Media and Communication), which funds international co-productions, Smaragdis added: “It was correct to fund Nolan’s Odyssey, as the organization aims to attract major productions to Greece. However, they have no right to dictate casting decisions; that is simply not their job.”
