Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o has fired back at critics objecting to her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic, The Odyssey, reminding detractors that the source material is fundamentally a work of myth.

Nyong’o will portray Helen, the legendary figure whose beauty famously “launched a thousand ships” and ignited the Trojan War in Homer’s ancient Greek epic. However, the casting announcement last week immediately triggered a fierce cultural debate, drawing sharp criticism from high-profile figures including tech billionaire Elon Musk, who argued that casting a Black actress in the role is historically and culturally inaccurate.

Speaking with Elle, Nyong’o dismissed the backlash, focusing instead on Nolan’s creative vision.

“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling,” Nyong’o said. “Our cast is representative of the world.”

When asked about the online outrage, she remained unbothered. “I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not. It’s quite something to be a part of The Odyssey, because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time.”

Elon Musk leads the backlash

The controversy escalated rapidly on social media, spearheaded by X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk. Musk accused director Christopher Nolan—who swept the 2024 Academy Awards with Oppenheimer—of having “grossly insulted the Greek people.” He also interacted approvingly with online memes, replying “true” to an image depicting a man dancing on Homer’s grave.

“I agree that she [Nyong’o] is beautiful,” Musk posted on X, “but casting a Black woman to play a White woman in a foundational work of European literature is no more right than casting a White man to play Shaka Zulu!”

Musk doubled down on his rhetoric, later writing on the platform: “Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist.”

The Odyssey follows controversy over Netflix’s Cleopatra

This backlash mirrors the international outcry surrounding the 2023 Netflix docudrama Queen Cleopatra in which the depiction of the Greek queen of Egypt as Black sparked legal threats in Egypt and accusations of “historical revisionism.” Critics argue that like the Cleopatra case, Nolan’s casting ignores the Hellenistic roots of these historical and mythological figures.

The new Oscar inclusion standards

The controversy comes as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences implements its 2024 representation and inclusion standards. These criteria require films to feature actors from underrepresented groups, including those of African descent, to be eligible for Best Picture nominations.
