The Israeli navy intercepted an activist flotilla sailing toward the Gaza Strip in an attempt to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of the enclave, according to the Global Sumud Flotilla aid mission.

“Military vessels are currently intercepting our fleet and IOF forces are boarding the first of our boats in broad daylight,” the Global Sumud Flotilla said on Monday.

The group called for safe passage for what it described as a “legal, non-violent humanitarian mission” and urged governments to intervene, accusing Israel of carrying out “illegal acts of piracy” to maintain its siege on Gaza.

Israeli Foreign Ministry accuses Gaza navy flotilla of political provocation

In a statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the flotilla’s humanitarian claims and described the mission as a political provocation: “Once again, a provocation for the sake of provocation: another so-called ‘humanitarian aid flotilla’ without humanitarian aid.”

Israel also claimed that two Turkish groups, Mavi Marmara and IHH, took part in the initiative. The ministry described them as “violent Turkish groups” and said Israeli authorities classify IHH as a terrorist organization.

Tel Aviv links mission to Hamas

According to the Israeli government, the flotilla aimed to serve Hamas rather than deliver meaningful humanitarian assistance. “The purpose of this provocation is to serve Hamas, distract from Hamas’s refusal to disarm, and obstruct progress on President Trump’s peace plan,” the Foreign Ministry maintained.

The statement also referred to the Peace Council, which Israel said oversees humanitarian activity in Gaza under UN Security Council Resolution 2803. According to Tel Aviv, the council has made clear that the flotilla’s real objective is publicity.

Israel asserts Gaza navy flotilla is unnecessary, as aid reaches enclave

Israel rejected the argument that the flotilla was necessary to deliver aid to Gaza, saying humanitarian supplies are already entering the territory in large quantities. “The Gaza Strip is flooded with aid,” the ministry contended, adding that since October 2025, more than 1.58 million tons of humanitarian assistance and thousands of tons of medical supplies have entered Gaza.

The Israeli government reiterated it would not permit any violation of what it called the lawful naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. “Israel will not permit any violation of the legal naval blockade of Gaza,” the Foreign Ministry stated, closing its statement by again calling on all participants in the flotilla to change course and immediately turn back around.
