AEK Athens secured the Greek Super League title in a breathtaking fashion on Sunday, overcoming a deficit to defeat rivals Panathinaikos 2-1. Coupled with a 1-1 draw between Olympiacos and PAOK in Piraeus, the victory mathematically confirmed AEK as champions with two matches to spare.
The atmosphere at the Alwyn Arena in Nea Filadelfia turned tense shortly after halftime when Panathinaikos took the lead through Andreas Tetteh. With Olympiacos simultaneously leading in their match, AEK’s grip on the trophy briefly seemed to be slipping, threatening to take the title race down to the wire.
The momentum shifted dramatically with the introduction of Zini. The Angolan forward proved to be the catalyst AEK needed, netting an equalizer just six minutes after coming off the bench. As the match headed into the dying moments, the drama reached its peak. In the 93rd minute, Luka Jovic threaded a precise pass into the box for Joao Mario, who finished with composure to ignite jubilant celebrations across the stadium and officially secure the silverware.
While AEK celebrated, Olympiacos and PAOK battled to a 1-1 draw at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium—a result that effectively extinguished any remaining mathematical hopes for the chasing pack.
Olympiacos drew first blood through Rodinei after the hour mark, but the lead was short-lived as PAOK’s Giannis Konstantelias struck back eight minutes later. The draw leaves PAOK in a marginally stronger position as they compete for Greece’s second UEFA Champions League qualification berth.
