A newly released audio recording from NASA’s Gemini 7 mission has revived one of the most intriguing moments in early space history: two astronauts calmly reported that they had encountered an unidentified bright object in space.

The exchange took place on December 5, 1965, as astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell flew Gemini 7, a nearly two-week mission designed to test how long humans could endure in orbit. During the flight, Borman radioed mission control in Houston and reported a “bogey” at the 10 o’clock position, a term used for an unidentified object.

Astronauts report unidentified objects against the darkness of space

The astronauts made clear that they were not simply describing a routine light or reflection. According to the released transcript, Borman said the crew could see debris and called the event an “actual sighting.” He also confirmed that they could see the booster rocket separately, which suggested that the object they discussed was not immediately identified as the Titan II stage that had carried them into orbit.

Lovell then offered one of the most striking descriptions in the exchange. He said he could see a bright body against the black background of space, surrounded by countless particles. The object appeared to move ahead of the spacecraft and slowly tumble, while smaller bright particles remained visible nearby.

What experts believe the astronauts saw

The newly public material does not prove that the Gemini 7 crew encountered an alien spacecraft. Specialists have long argued that ice crystals, waste particles, or spacecraft fragments reflecting sunlight can explain many sightings in orbit.

In this case, the bright particles may have come from frozen waste or other material released by the spacecraft, while the larger object may have been linked to the Titan II booster.

Still, the audio matters because it clearly records trained astronauts in orbit reporting unidentified bright objects and particles in space. Mission control also treated the observation seriously enough to ask whether the crew saw the booster or something else.

Part of a wider UFO file release

The Gemini 7 audio forms part of a broader U.S. government release of files related to Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAPs, the official term now used for what many people call UFOs. The Department of War said the files came through a new transparency effort involving several federal agencies, including NASA, the FBI, the Department of Energy, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office.

The initial release includes 162 files, covering documents, videos, reports, transcripts, photographs, and eyewitness accounts from several decades. A government website now publishes the UAP-related records, and officials say they expect to release more material on a rolling basis.

Other astronaut sightings of unidentified objects in space-age files

The release also includes material connected to other space missions. The documents point to earlier NASA cases, including an Apollo 11 post-flight discussion in 1969 involving Buzz Aldrin, as well as an Apollo 17 image showing three unexplained lights above the lunar surface. The material also covers more recent cases involving unusual objects reported in military or restricted airspace.

Government officials have presented the release as a transparency measure, not as confirmation of extraterrestrial life. Many sightings remain inconclusive, and previous official reviews have often linked similar reports to misidentified objects, natural phenomena, sensor effects, or debris.
