The Greek passport has climbed to 5th place in this year’s Henley & Partners Passport Index, a ranking that measures the global “clout” and mobility of travel documents.
Greece’s performance is exceptional, outranking countries such as the United Kingdom, the USA, Australia, and Canada, proving that holding a Greek passport is both a privilege and a significant advantage.
A historic high for the Greek passport
This marks the highest ranking for Greece in the 20-year history of the index. It represents a remarkable recovery from its lowest point in 2010, when the country fell to 12th place. According to the Henley study, which analyzes 199 passports and 227 travel destinations, the Greek passport is now among the strongest and most attractive in the world.
Based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the index is considered the most reliable tool for evaluating global mobility and the degree of access a citizen has to the rest of the world.
Visa-free access to 184 countries
Greece moved up one spot from last year, returning to the 5th-place position it held in 2024. Holders of the Greek passport can now travel to 184 destinations without a prior visa.
Greece shares the 5th spot with Austria, Portugal, and Malta, sitting just one destination behind the 4th-place group (which includes Switzerland, Germany, and France with 185 destinations).
The global landscape
The Leaders: Singapore holds 1st place (192 destinations), followed by Japan, South Korea, and the UAE in 2nd (187), and Sweden in 3rd (186).
The Regional View: Turkey ranks 44th (113 destinations), Albania 40th (121), and Cyprus 13th (174).
The Decliners: The US passport has seen a steady decline, dropping from the world’s most powerful in 2006 and 2013 to 10th place today.
The Risers: The UAE has seen a “Mount Everest-style” ascent, jumping from 65th in 2010 to 2nd place this year.
The Henley Index is more than just a guide for tourists. It is also a vital tool for investors and governments. A high-ranking passport reflects domestic stability and international prestige. For the average citizen, it amounts to less bureaucracy and the freedom of spontaneous global travel.
