Archbishop Elpidophoros of America hosted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the Archdiocesan headquarters for an introductory meeting following the Mayor’s recent inauguration.

The discussion centered on public service, community well-being, and a shared commitment to supporting the city’s most at-risk populations.

A shared mission for service to the vulnerable

The meeting highlighted a mutual dedication to uplifting those often overlooked by society. Archbishop Elpidophoros congratulated Mayor Mamdani on his election, describing it as a restoration of trust and a sign of hope for many New Yorkers. The Archbishop emphasized the Church’s ongoing mission to embrace all individuals unconditionally and provide a sense of belonging to those feeling marginalized.

Mamdani, who previously represented Astoria and Long Island City, acknowledged the significant role the Church plays in the lives of many New Yorkers. He noted that his administration’s responsibilities align closely with the Church’s message of supporting the vulnerable, specifically citing the needs of the “widow, the orphan, and the stranger.”

Elpidophoros and Mamdani commit to future cooperation

Both leaders expressed a strong desire to maintain an active partnership to address the challenges facing diverse communities across the five boroughs. These include:

  • Community support: The Archbishop applauded the Mayor for reaching out to those feeling abandoned and offered the Church’s cooperation in future initiatives.
  • Civic responsibility: Mayor Mamdani stated that he looked forward to the work the two offices can accomplish together on behalf of all New Yorkers.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of their shared values, setting a collaborative tone for the Mayor’s term in office.
