Ancient Andean people facing hardships relied on strong family connections and shared movement to endure difficult conditions, according to a study published in Nature. The research shows that kinship networks helped communities respond to environmental instability, food shortages, and disease over long periods.
The findings come from Argentina’s Uspallata Valley, a southern edge of early Andean farming. Researchers found that movement based on family ties allowed groups to adapt during extended stress.
Genetic evidence shows that many migrants were closely related and moved into the region over several generations. These ties, often traced through maternal lines, helped maintain social continuity. There was no evidence of violence between local groups and newcomers. In some cases, both were buried in the same sites, suggesting peaceful coexistence.
The study also traces more than 2,000 years of population history. It shows that local hunter-gatherers gradually adopted farming rather than being replaced by incoming populations.
Genetic data from 46 individuals reveal strong continuity between early inhabitants and later farming communities, even after maize and other crops became widespread.

Researchers combined genetic analysis with chemical signals preserved in bones and teeth, known as stable isotopes. These markers reveal diet and movement. The results show that maize consumption varied over time, indicating flexible farming practices.
However, between about 800 and 600 years ago, one burial site shows a different pattern. Many individuals relied heavily on maize and were not local, based on their isotopic signatures.

Although these migrants were genetically close to nearby groups, they experienced a steady population decline. Climate records point to long periods of environmental instability during this time. Skeletal evidence shows signs of poor nutrition during childhood and infection.
Ancient DNA also revealed tuberculosis at the site. The strain belongs to a lineage known from pre-contact South America and extends its known presence farther south than previously documented.
Researcher Nicolás Rascovan said the finding expands understanding of how the disease circulated and highlights the importance of studying ancient pathogens alongside human history.
Co-author Ramiro Barberena said the evidence suggests people moved under severe pressure and relied on family networks to cope with the crisis.

The study also identifies a deep-rooted genetic lineage that remains present in the region today. Researcher Pierre Luisi said these challenges claim that Indigenous descendants disappeared after the formation of the Argentine state.
The work was carried out in close collaboration with Huarpe Indigenous communities. Members contributed to the interpretation and co-authored the study.
Researchers held regular discussions to address permissions, uncertainties, and the communication of results. A Spanish version of the study was also prepared to improve local access.
The findings show that ancient Andean people adapted to hardships in different ways, shaped by local conditions and social ties. The research provides insight into how communities respond to crises and highlights the lasting role of cooperation and family networks.
