An exhibition exploring the ties between Greece and the United States during the Greek War of Independence will soon open in Astoria, New York, ahead of the city’s annual Greek Independence Day celebrations.
Titled The Greek Revolution (1821-1829) Through American Eyes, the exhibition will be installed at the Stathakion Cultural Center in the Astoria neighborhood of New York City. It will remain open to visitors through the New York Greek Independence Day Parade on April 26.
The exhibition examines the shared ideals and historical connections that linked Greece and the United States during the struggle for Greek independence. Through historical documents, images and narratives, it highlights the ways in which individual Americans engaged with and supported the Greek revolutionary cause during the early 19th century.
Organizers say the display also invites visitors to consider the evolution of American identity during the first five decades of the republic, a period when US foreign policy was still developing and the unresolved issue of slavery was pushing the country toward its own defining conflict.
By presenting the Greek War of Independence through the perspectives of American observers, supporters, and philhellenes, the exhibition illustrates the exchange of ideas on freedom, democracy, and national self-determination that connected the two nations during that era.
