In a highly confrontational address from the floor of Parliament, Greek Solution leader Kyriakos Velopoulos directed a series of aggressive and derogatory remarks toward US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. The speech, which focused on US military strikes in Iran, quickly pivoted from geopolitical critique to personal insult.

While analyzing the motivations behind the US intervention, Velopoulos insisted that the conflict was driven purely by energy interests. “It’s about the oil. That is the truth,” he argued, claiming that the US was attempting to cut off China’s energy supply by targeting Iran.

“These are the truths you avoid telling,” he declared.

The rhetoric then shifted from policy critique to a pointed, personal attack on the Ambassador. In an effort to mock her, Velopoulos referred to the US representative as “Mrs. Milfoil.” The term was a calculated, crude pun, blending the vulgar slang term “MILF” with the word “oil,” which Velopoulos had just identified as the motive for the conflict.

He further attempted to diminish the Ambassador’s professional authority by linking her to a popular Greek cultural figure. “That woman, ‘Mrs. Milfoil,’ or whatever her name is, that close friend of Mr. Argyros—she told us: ‘Close the port, it’s Chinese,'” Velopoulos remarked, referring to the well-publicized social association between the Ambassador and popular Greek singer Konstantinos Argyros.

By framing the Ambassador as a “socialite” rather than a diplomat and by using the derogatory pun, Velopoulos signaled his intent to strip the US representative of the dignity afforded to her office.

The remarks drew immediate and sharp criticism. The comments sparked heated discussions in the parliamentary lobby, where MPs and journalists alike condemned the rhetoric as inappropriate and vulgar, a departure from parliamentary decorum.

Who is Velopoulos?

Velopoulos is the leader of the right-wing Greek Solution Party, which places heavy emphasis on Greek national identity, tradition, and the role of the Greek Orthodox Church. The party advocates for strict stances on border control, and its supporters are strongly anti-immigration, holding “Greece-first” views on foreign policy.

Velopoulos often utilizes populist rhetoric, positioning himself as a defender of the “common people” against established political elites, whom he frequently portrays as being out of touch or subservient to foreign interests. While not necessarily calling for an immediate exit from the EU, the party is frequently described as Euroskeptic, expressing skepticism toward increased European integration. It has also been accused of being pro-Russian.
