British authorities arrested the former Prince Andrew on Thursday morning on charges of misconduct in public office in connection to links with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The arrest is part of an ongoing police investigation into allegations that the King’s brother leaked confidential government documents to Epstein.

The Metropolitan Police had previously confirmed in early February that they were reviewing claims involving the unauthorized transfer of sensitive state information. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his royal titles and duties in 2022, has consistently denied any wrongdoing, though he has expressed “regret” over his association with Epstein.

British Monarchy rocked over Andrew’s association with Epstein

The arrest marks a historic and unprecedented moment for the British Monarchy; Andrew is the first senior member of the Royal Family in modern history to be taken into police custody. Buckingham Palace has thus far declined to comment, maintaining strict silence on the matter.

The disgraced former prince reportedly holds a grim record within the “Epstein Files.” Among the approximately seven million pages of declassified documents, Andrew’s name appears 302 times across 16 different files.

Crucially, the investigation is also scrutinizing notorious photographic evidence. In one controversial image, Mountbatten-Windsor is allegedly seen kneeling over a young woman—a photo that has become a focal point of the public outcry against him. BBC Royal Correspondent Sean Coughlan described the morning’s events as a “seismic shift” in an already scandalous case.

“It is difficult to find a historical precedent for the arrest of a King’s brother,” Coughlan noted. “While Andrew has systematically denied all allegations of illegal activity, his arrest remains a shocking development that has sent shockwaves through the Commonwealth.”
