According to the latest 2024 data from INSETE, based on the National Border Survey, Crete recorded the highest average tourism spending per traveler among all regions in Greece, while Central Macedonia recorded the lowest.

The data reveals a stark contrast in tourism models across the country:

  • Crete: Leads the nation with an average expenditure of €767 ($909) per visit
  • South Aegean: Follows closely at €752 ($891), reaffirming sustained economic dominance of high-demand island destinations
  • Ionian Islands: Recorded €578 ($685) per visit
  • Attica: Reached €541 ($641), showing significant strengthening of its economic footprint compared to previous years
  • Other regions: The remaining regions average around €321 ($380)
  • Central Macedonia: Sits at the bottom of the scale with just €211 ($250) per visit

Why the discrepancy in tourism spending in Greece?

These wide gaps in tourism spending in Greece are primarily driven by the duration of stay and the visitor profile. Crete and the South Aegean rely heavily on air arrivals, long-term vacationers, and luxury accommodation packages. These visitors typically stay longer and spend significantly more on services and leisure.

In contrast, Central Macedonia’s tourism is dominated by road arrivals from neighboring Balkan markets. These trips often have a shorter duration and lower daily costs, which naturally compresses the total expenditure per tourist.

A notable national trend has emerged. While spending per visit within individual regions is rising, the number of regions a tourist visits during a single trip is declining. In practice, tourists are spending more money at their primary destination but are exploring fewer parts of the country per journey.

The policy challenge

The conclusion for regional tourism policy is clear. The primary challenge is not merely increasing daily spending but extending the length of stay and encouraging cross-regional travel.

By creating connected tourism routes between regions, Greece can ensure that the economic benefits of tourism are distributed more equitably across the entire nation.
