Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has been nominated Best Director at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards for his latest work, Bugonia, a black comedy that continues his run of bold and unconventional films. Known globally for his distinct cinematic voice, the Greek director takes on an English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! in this new release.

Bugonia, released in 2025 and written by Will Tracy, follows two young men who kidnap a powerful CEO, believing she is an alien plotting the destruction of Earth. The nomination places Lanthimos among this year’s top contenders as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its full list of nominees.

Lanthimos started off in experimental theater before making his directorial debut with the 2001 comedy My Best Friend. He gained international attention with Dogtooth in 2009, which won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.

His transition to English-language cinema brought critical acclaim with films like The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017). His ongoing collaboration with actress Emma Stone includes The Favourite (2018), Poor Things (2023), Kinds of Kindness (2024), and now Bugonia.

He received Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Picture for both The Favourite and Poor Things, with the latter also earning the Golden Lion at Venice.

The upcoming ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Aside from Greek director Lanthimos’ film Bugonia, leading the BAFTA nominations is the thriller One Battle After Another, followed by the vampire horror Sinners.

Other top-nominated titles include Hamnet, which explores the family life of William Shakespeare, and the table tennis drama Marty Supreme.”
