Chinese researchers have unveiled six major archaeological discoveries that offer a clearer view into the development of ancient China. The findings, made possible through modern technology and scientific methods, were announced on Wednesday by a key lab under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The archaeological discoveries span several areas of ancient Chinese life, including agriculture, textiles, animal domestication, and military artifacts. At the center is a newly established animal specimen archive, holding over 100,000 items. The collection includes the oldest known domesticated dogs and pigs identified in China.
Tomb excavation reveals rare military and textile artifacts
In Qinghai Province, a Tang Dynasty tomb dating to between 618 and 907 was excavated. Researchers restored a suit of gilded bronze armor found at the site, using laboratory-based restoration techniques.

A piece of textile recovered from the same tomb was dated to before 750 AD, confirming that China was among the earliest regions to use the ikat dyeing technique.
Agricultural findings include the first recorded discovery of red bayberry trees in China’s history. Scientists also traced the development of early dryland farming practices.
Agricultural advances and water management
To examine ancient water systems, teams employed satellite imaging, drone surveys, and 3D modeling.
These tools helped document water conservancy projects in the Yangtze River Basin, estimated to be 5,000 years old. The systems focused on managing floods and irrigation.
The lead researchers explain that these findings highlight how ancient communities adapted to environmental changes and developed strategies to manage natural resources. The new archaeological discoveries provide new depth to how ancient China evolved over time.
