In a series of dramatic developments following the US military operation in Caracas, President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuela will “hand over” tens of millions of barrels of oil, while Venezuela’s interim President has declared seven days of national mourning for those killed during the intervention.
Oil for “market prices” and Presidential oversight
On Tuesday, President Trump took to Truth Social to announce a massive transfer of Venezuelan energy resources to the United States. “I am pleased to announce that the interim authorities of Venezuela will be delivering 30 to 50 million barrels of high-quality sanctioned oil to the United States,” Trump posted.
The President further clarified that he would personally oversee the resulting revenue. “This oil will be sold at market prices, and the funds will be controlled by me, the President of the United States, to ensure they are used to benefit the people of both Venezuela and the US!”
National mourning in Venezuela
In Caracas, Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, who was sworn in on Monday following the capture of Nicolás Maduro, declared a seven-day period of national mourning. Addressing the nation via state television, Rodríguez paid tribute to those she described as “young martyrs” who died defending the country and the former Maduro administration.
“The images of the bodies have pierced my soul, but I know they fell as martyrs for this republic,” Rodríguez stated, emphasizing that her government remains in control. “The Venezuelan government runs our country, no one else. No foreigner governs Venezuela.”
While a final death toll remains unconfirmed, preliminary reports indicate significant casualties—at least 55 people, including 23 Venezuelan military personnel and 32 Cuban security members—from the US military operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
The number of civilian casualties remains unknown, though some sources estimate the total death toll could amount to between 70 to 80 people.
