Skopelos has taken center stage in a new ranking tailored for German film enthusiasts. According to a recent study by the German-language travel platform HolidayCheck.de, the island is the premier destination for those looking to “follow in the footsteps of Mamma Mia.”

The study identifies the five most beautiful European locations associated with the cinematic adaptation of the timeless musical, as determined by traveler impressions.

Skopelos: The “heart” of the musical

Among enchanting Greek regions, fairytale-like locations in Croatia, and iconic landmarks in London, Skopelos has claimed the #1 spot. HolidayCheck describes the lush, fertile island as the true “heart” of the first film, noting that it exudes a charm that feels as though it emerged directly from a movie set.

Key highlights for visitors include:

  • Agios Ioannis chapel in Kastri: Perched dramatically atop a rock with panoramic Aegean views, this iconic chapel served as a central filming site.
  • The village of Glossa: Located in the northwest, this picturesque mountain village offers a nostalgic glimpse into the film’s most memorable scenes.
  • Pristine beaches: The island’s coastline continues to attract fans seeking the sun-drenched atmosphere of the fictional Kalokairi.

Strategic promotion for Skopelos and the Mamma Mia legacy

The Municipality of Skopelos is currently executing a targeted promotional campaign aimed at international media. This initiative focuses on thematic tourism, emphasizing the unbreakable bond between the island and the Mamma Mia legacy.

The Municipality recently participated in a special philanthropic event in partnership with London’s “Mamma Mia! The Party.” The event garnered significant attention from British celebrities and media outlets. The local strategy aims to balance the island’s cinematic fame with its traditional roots.

“Our goal is to reach different market segments by highlighting the diverse experiences Skopelos offers—from rejuvenation and relaxation to history and tradition,” explains George Papadavid, the Municipality’s Authorized Councilor for Tourism. “The international traveling public is responding to our invitation to enjoy an island with cinematic allure that has never lost its authenticity.”
