Greece is taking decisive steps to regulate glamping, the popular “glamorous camping” trend, with the Ministry of Tourism introducing a comprehensive legal framework.
While glamping has been present in Greece since 2012, the new regulations aim to standardize the industry, ensuring sustainable development and high-quality services that align with international luxury standards.
Standards for glamping sites in Greece
Under the new framework, glamping sites will now be classified similarly to high-end hotels but with specific criteria tailored to nature-based hospitality. Glamping units will be restricted to 4-star and 5-star categories only.
To achieve these ratings, businesses must meet strict technical specifications and reach a minimum points threshold (6,000 points for 4 stars; 7,000 points for 5 stars) through a mix of mandatory and optional criteria.
Capacity and spatial regulations
To preserve authentic contact with nature, which defines glamping, Article 1 establishes clear spatial limits pertaining to:
- Structure capacity: Each structure is limited to four adult beds plus an additional two beds for children.
- Privacy zones: A minimum distance of ten meters must be maintained between structures to ensure guest privacy.
- Environmental integration: At least fifty percent of the total site area must consist of vegetation/plant coverage to provide natural shade and environmental protection. Internal transport within the sites must also utilize eco-friendly means.
Mandatory accessibility
The new law places a heavy emphasis on inclusivity. Under Article 2, glamping units must comply with the national “Design for All” guidelines, including:
- Unobstructed access: All indoor and outdoor areas must be autonomously and safely accessible by individuals with disabilities or reduced mobility.
- Dedicated capacity: At least five percent of the total unit capacity must be specifically designed for guests with disabilities.
- Technical audits: The installation of any new glamping structure now requires a formal accessibility study to be submitted.
