The Greek island of Lemnos looked more like the Arctic Circle this New Year’s Day, as a sharp drop in temperature brought in heavy snow to the remote Aegean island, resulting in breathtaking landscapes—even as viewed from outer space.
According to the National Observatory of Athens, the combination of intense precipitation and freezing temperatures resulted in 100% snow coverage across the entire island. A satellite image captured by the European Sentinel-2 on Thursday afternoon reveals the stunning “all-white” transformation of the landscape.
From the smallest remote villages to the main town, residents awoke on New Year’s Day to a white, white world.
Social media was quickly flooded with photos and videos of the rare island occurrence. Locals of all ages headed outdoors to build snowmen and enjoy a New Year’s celebration they wouldn’t soon forget.
Due to the expected overnight frost, the Municipality of Lemnos announced that public services will open later today, Friday, January 2nd, beginning at 9:00 AM.
A biting cold snap gripped Greece as it ushered in the New Year, bringing plummeting temperatures. The system brought snowfall to sea-level areas in the island regions. Meteorologists had predicted that snow could fall on Skyros, the Northern Sporades, and the northern Aegean islands, including Lemnos and Thassos.
