A powerful explosion rocked a residential area of Thessaloniki early on Christmas morning, damaging a bank and nearby buildings. According to Greek authorities, there were no injuries reported.
The explosion occurred at around 3:20 AM local time outside a bank branch in the Evosmos district, shattering windows, damaging parked vehicles, and causing structural harm to surrounding apartment buildings and shops. Residents described a loud detonation that jolted them awake and sent debris into the street.
Emergency services, including police bomb disposal units and firefighters, quickly sealed off the area while investigators examined the scene. Initial assessments indicate that an improvised explosive device was placed outside the bank, although authorities have not released details about its construction or the amount of explosives used.
The case has been taken over by specialized units of the Greek Police, including the anti-terrorism division, often referred to in Greece as the country’s equivalent of the FBI. Officials are reviewing security camera footage from the bank and surrounding businesses while forensic teams search for evidence that could identify those responsible.
Police sources have said no warning call was received prior to the explosion, a factor that investigators consider significant, as it may indicate an intent to cause damage rather than merely issue a symbolic threat.
While no injuries were reported, the explosion resulted in extensive material damage. Several parked cars were struck by debris, and nearby residential buildings suffered broken windows and damaged facades. Authorities said damage assessments were ongoing, and residents were advised to avoid the immediate area until safety checks were completed.
The blast occurred during the early hours of a public holiday, when foot traffic was minimal, a circumstance that likely prevented casualties.
Attacks involving explosive devices targeting banks and government-related infrastructure have occurred periodically in Greece over the past decades, often attributed to small extremist or anarchist groups seeking to strike what may be viewed as symbols of capitalism or state power.
Officials have stressed it is too early to determine a motive or place blame, and no group has claimed responsibility as of Thursday afternoon. Authorities have also asserted security measures will be reinforced in the area while the investigation continues.
