Diane Kochilas, the renowned New York Times bestselling author and host of the Public Television series My Greek Table, released her newest cookbook, ATHENS: Food. Stories. Love. The book is being hailed as a profound exploration of the Greek capital’s dynamic and evolving food scene, blending ancient tradition with cutting-edge global influences.

Kochilas, who has called Athens home for over three decades, presents the book as her personal “love song” to the city. It captures Athens not just as a historical site but as a “living, breathing metropolis” where culinary creativity flourishes at the intersection of old and new.

A tale of tradition and reinvention

The collection features over 100 recipes, spanning the breadth of Athenian gastronomy. Readers will find recipes for beloved Greek street foods like tyropitakia kourou (small cheese pies) and crispy fried feta triangles, alongside innovative modern creations.

The book showcases how Athens’ cooking is constantly reinventing itself, including dishes such as a Greek-Japanese inspired miso melitzanosalata (eggplant dip) and inventive spanakopita croissants.

The book is more than a simple recipe collection; it’s a rich narrative interwoven with the stories that define Athens’ unique food culture: immigrant cooks, bustling neighborhood markets, foragers, and contemporary chefs.

“A love letter to Athens—its food, its people, and its soul,” praises Publishers Weekly. “Diane Kochilas gives us the city in all its flavors, from the humblest souvlaki stand to the most inventive Michelin-starred table.”

Kochilas’ dedication to Greek cuisine

Kochilas is celebrated globally for bringing healthy, delicious Greek cuisine to an international audience. Her previous work, The Ikaria Way, was a bestseller focused on the longevity and plant-forward traditions of her ancestral island.

In ATHENS: Food. Stories. Love, she shifts her focus to the modern Greek capital, presenting it as the “beating heart of Mediterranean cooking today.” The book successfully combines elements of memoir, reportage, and culinary insight, ensuring the recipes are both authentic and accessible for home cooks.

Suzy Karadsheh, New York Times bestselling author of The Mediterranean Dish Cookbook, summarizes the book’s appeal: “No one captures the heart of Greek cooking like Diane Kochilas. ATHENS is more than a cookbook—it’s a journey through a city and a cuisine that never stops reinventing itself.”
