A recent US intelligence assessment concerning the conflict in Ukraine warns that Russian President Vladimir Putin appears more determined than ever to continue the war and prevail on the battlefield.
According to NBC News, which cited a senior US official and a high-ranking congressional staffer, the analysis was shared with members of Congress in October. According to the assessment, US agencies see no indication that Russia is ready to compromise on the Ukrainian issue, even as US President Donald Trump seeks to mediate peace talks.
Putin is more determined on Ukraine than ever before
The recent analysis presents similar conclusions to previous Western intelligence evaluations regarding Moscow’s stance since the invasion began in February 2022. However, according to the two sources familiar with its content, the intelligence agencies now believe Putin is more unyielding than ever before.
The assessment suggests that despite heavy Russian military losses and domestic economic difficulties, the Russian President is determined to secure Ukrainian territory and expand his country’s influence to justify the cost in lives and resources.
Trump’s growing frustration with Putin over Ukraine
The report comes as President Trump demonstrated increasing frustration with his Russian counterpart. Last week, Trump canceled a planned meeting with Putin in Budapest, Hungary, and, for the first time since returning to the White House in January, imposed sanctions on Moscow.
This is viewed as a clear indication of the US President’s mounting annoyance with Putin’s evasiveness and unwillingness to make any concessions toward peace. Trump’s growing impatience was highlighted by his exasperated comment last week: “Every time I talk to Vladimir, our discussions are good, but they lead nowhere. They just lead nowhere.”
White House response
The White House declined to comment on the recent intelligence report, instead referring NBC News to Trump’s public statements on his peace efforts and the sanctions imposed on Moscow.
A White House official issued a written statement:
“As the President has said, these are extremely strong sanctions against the two major Russian oil companies, which he hopes will contribute to ending the war. He has made it clear that it is time to stop the bloodshed and reach an agreement to end the conflict. The United States will continue to support a peaceful resolution. Whether this will be permanent depends on Russia’s will to negotiate in good faith.”
Trump has long been committed to mediating an end to the war in Ukraine, having promised during his campaign to secure peace within twenty-four hours of returning to the White House. So far, however, his efforts to persuade Russia to come to the negotiating table and agree to a ceasefire have been unsuccessful.
