Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for a groundbreaking sports venue that will place football fans more than 1,150 feet (350 meters) above ground. The proposed “air stadium,” part of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious NEOM development, is expected to hold 46,000 spectators and will be built atop a high-rise skyscraper as part of preparations for hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
The concept, which has gone viral following the release of an unofficial AI-generated video, shows a futuristic stadium perched on a tall tower, attracting widespread attention on social media.
While Saudi Arabia has not officially confirmed any design changes, the images suggest a shift from earlier plans that envisioned the stadium on top of “The Line,” a planned horizontal city still under development.
Updated design for NEOM stadium raises questions
Originally, the NEOM Stadium was introduced in August of last year as one of 15 advanced venues to be completed before the global tournament.
The vision included a structure integrated with The Line, the city planned as a single linear skyscraper stretching across the desert. Although the capacity and elevation remain the same in the updated version, the new visuals place the stadium on a more traditional vertical tower.

Construction on the venue is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion targeted for 2032. This timeline is designed to allow for testing and readiness ahead of the 2034 World Cup, where Saudi Arabia will serve as the host nation.
As speculation grows over whether the recent images reflect a final design change, no formal update has been issued by project officials. The current discussion appears driven largely by online reactions to the concept video, rather than any confirmed revision to the stadium’s location or structure.
Saudi Arabia’s air stadium part of broader World Cup vision
The NEOM Stadium is part of a wider initiative that showcases Saudi Arabia’s push to deliver innovative and high-tech infrastructure for the tournament.
Among the other proposed venues is the King Salman Stadium, which is set to become the new home for the national football team. With a seating capacity of 92,000, it stands as the largest of all the planned stadiums.
Other concepts in the lineup include designs inspired by natural landscapes. Some are modeled after rock canyon formations, while others are set to be built into cliff faces, reflecting the country’s focus on blending modern engineering with dramatic environments.
The air stadium, along with its counterparts, marks a bold statement in Saudi Arabia’s vision for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
