The highly anticipated trial for the Tempi rail disaster is set to begin in Larisa on March 23, 2026, bringing a measure of judicial focus after a tragedy that shook Greece.

The disaster occurred on February 28, 2023, when a southbound passenger train and a northbound freight train collided head-on near the Tempi Valley, resulting in the deaths of 57 people, many of whom were university students. It was the country’s worst-ever rail accident.

Authorities pointed the finger squarely at the Larisa station master on duty that night. The station master did indeed make the critical error of manually routing the passenger train onto the same track as the oncoming freight train.

Thirty-six non-political individuals will face trial at the Three-Member Court of Appeal for Criminal Cases in Larisa. However, the ongoing investigation has revealed that this single human error was only possible—and catastrophic—due to a cascade of systemic failures.

Subsequent investigations, driven by widespread public outrage and the relentless activism of victims’ families, have revealed a series of failures, including years of underinvestment, severe staff shortages, and the non-operation of key safety and signaling systems that had received EU funding but were never put into effect.

Allegations of a government cover-up, such as the swift clearance of the crash site and the destruction of potential evidence, have further fueled public outrage. The judicial investigation now extends beyond the immediate railway officials to include those accountable for the long-standing safety deficiencies that enabled the tragedy.

The trial is widely viewed as a critical test of accountability and the rule of law in Greece.
