Israel has approved a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release plan, according to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.
The ceasefire is slated to begin early on Saturday, 24 hours after the deal was approved.
Key elements of the agreement‘s first phase include:
-
- The release of 48 Israeli hostages held in Gaza (with 20 believed to be alive)
- The release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners by Israel
- The start of an Israeli troop withdrawal to a line that leaves Israel in control of 53 percent of the Gaza Strip, as part of the first of three withdrawal stages outlined in the Trump plan
- The entry of hundreds of trucks of aid into Gaza daily
US officials are moving up to 200 troops already in the Middle East to establish a civil-military coordination center in Israel. This will coordinate a multinational force—including forces from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey—tasked with monitoring the truce and reporting violations.
The US military will lead this task force, which will also oversee humanitarian assistance, but no US forces will enter Gaza. President Trump suggested the Israeli hostages could be released as early as “Monday or Tuesday.”
