The political failure in Washington to pass a last-minute funding bill has triggered a US government shutdown, with immediate and practical effects on services provided by the US Embassy in Greece and the US consulate in Thessaloniki.
While the broad global financial impact is viewed as a “temporary blip,” the shutdown means an immediate reduction in non-essential services for both US citizens residing in Greece and Greek citizens planning travel to the United States.
US shutdown impact in Greece
The US Embassy confirmed that scheduled passport and visa services for both Americans and Greek applicants will “continue as the situation permits.” Because these services are fee-funded, they are often shielded from short shutdowns. However, experts warn that any prolonged lapse could force the embassy to reduce staffing, leading to significant delays and backlogs for new visa appointments and renewals.
The Embassy announced that its official social media channels, including Instagram, will not be regularly updated except for “urgent safety and security information.” This leaves the public with limited access to routine information.
Like other US government employees globally, non-essential personnel in Greece have been placed on unpaid leave, limiting the Embassy’s overall operational capacity.
Crucial staff, including those providing emergency services to US citizens, continue to work but will not receive pay until Congress passes a funding bill.
The shutdown, the first since the end of 2018, means that while essential services (i.e. emergency aid for US citizens) remain available, anyone with a non-urgent passport, visa, or general inquiry should prepare for significantly limited response times and monitor the official State Department website, travel.state.gov, for the most up-to-date operating status.
