New York City served as the setting for the first meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the new US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. The “introductory” chat took place during an Atlantic Council event.
Guilfoyle, whose appointment as the first female US Ambassador to Greece has drawn significant attention due to her high-profile background as a Fox News personality, prosecutor, and senior political fundraiser for Donald Trump, is scheduled to be sworn in on Monday and arrive in Athens later in October.
While the diplomatic exchange was brief, Prime Minister Mitsotakis used his platform at the event to underline the strategic value of the Hellenic Republic. He portrayed Greece as a vital ally linking the markets of India and the Gulf states with Europe, emphasizing its rising role as a natural hub for US investment and a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The initial meeting sets the stage for a new phase of US-Greece relations, overseen by a politically connected Ambassador whose mandate will focus on strengthening relations between the US and Greece.
Speaking to Greek Reporter this week, Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Turkey, said President Trump loves the country and this is why he “hand-picked” Kimberly Gillfoyle, “the best person possible who has a personal relationship with him,” to be the US ambassador to Greece.
