Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis is in New York City for the 80th High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly, where he will participate in a series of high-level meetings and events. Tight security measures are in place across Manhattan for the arrival of world leaders and officials.

The Prime Minister’s agenda is packed with diplomatic meetings, economic discussions, and community events, reflecting Greece’s increasingly active role on the international stage.

Artificial intelligence at the forefront

A significant focus of the trip is the role of artificial intelligence (AI). On Wednesday, September 24, Mitsotakis will speak twice at the UN on the topic of AI, addressing its implications for international peace and security and the protection of minors in the digital age.

His remarks will be part of a debate hosted by South Korea, which holds the UN Security Council presidency this month.

Diplomacy and economic engagement

During his time in New York City, the Prime Minister will engage with a diverse range of international figures. He is scheduled to meet with heads of state and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. On Tuesday, he will attend a reception hosted by US President Donald Trump.

He is also expected to meet Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, following weeks of diplomatic effort aimed at de-escalating recent tensions between Greece and Turkey.

Moreover, Mitsotakis will meet with numerous investors and representatives from leading companies in the energy, defense, and pharmaceutical sectors. He plans to present the strong investment prospects of the Greek economy, highlighting its primary surpluses and recent tax cuts.

Greece’s Prime Minister will be connecting with the diaspora

Kyriakos Mitsotakis will also make time to connect with the Greek-American and Jewish communities. On Wednesday afternoon, he will address a luncheon co-organized by 28 Greek-American organizations, including AHEPA, HALC, and PSEKA.

That evening, he will deliver a message at a ceremony honoring Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with the Templeton Prize.

The Prime Minister of Greece will also be addressing the UN General Assembly

The highlight of the Prime Minister’s trip will be his address to the UN General Assembly on Friday, September 26.

In his speech, he will discuss the volatile international and regional geopolitical environment and present Greece as a pillar of stability within it. He will also touch on global challenges and risks, from the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine to the Middle East.

Foreign Minister’s parallel agenda

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis is accompanying the Prime Minister and will also conduct his own extensive program of meetings. He will engage with numerous foreign ministers from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa to discuss contemporary global challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.

Gerapetritis will also participate in several trilateral and quadrilateral meetings with regional partners and chair the Ministerial Session of the Forum of Ancient Civilizations, as Greece holds the presidency for 2025. His participation is particularly notable being that Greece is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, with a focus on peaceful dispute resolution and respect for international law.
