Greek cuisine is a treasure trove of flavors and traditions that reflect the country’s history, culture, and warm sense of hospitality. Known for its reliance on fresh ingredients—vegetables, legumes, olive oil, herbs—Greek dishes are both wholesome and flavorful, but beyond the savory offerings, two Greek desserts also recently earned a place among the world’s top ten cheese-based pastries.
The focus is on Melopita, which secured fourth place, and Sfakianopita, which ranked tenth. Melopita, a honey-and-cheese pie, hails from the island of Sifnos, while Sfakianopita is a delicacy from Crete. Their appearance on the TasteAtlas list underscores Greece’s rich culinary heritage and the lasting global appeal of its local traditions.
The world’s top 10 cheese desserts—with two Greek desserts on the list
- Sernik (Poland): Sernik is Poland’s iconic cheesecake, rooted in Christian and Jewish traditions. Made with twaróg (curd cheese), eggs, and sugar, it has been a staple for centuries. Its popularity grew in the 17th century after King Jan III Sobieski brought the recipe home from Vienna, cementing its place as a national favorite.
- Kunāfah (Egypt): This decadent Middle Eastern dessert features layers of shredded kataifi pastry filled with rich, creamy cheese, flavored with orange zest and cardamom, and soaked in fragrant sugar syrup. Kunāfah is celebrated for its perfect balance of crunch, creaminess, and syrupy sweetness.
- Basque Cheesecake (San Sebastián, Spain): Known locally as tarta de queso or gazta tarta, this crustless cheesecake is famous for its caramelized “burnt” top and luxuriously creamy center. Created in San Sebastián’s La Viña Bar, it has become an international sensation.
- Melopita (Sifnos, Greece): This light Greek treat combines fresh mizithra or anthotyro cheese, honey, and eggs, baked into a crustless pie. Traditionally linked to the island of Sifnos, Melopita is often finished with a dusting of cinnamon and extra honey, offering a delicate sweetness with rustic charm.

5. New York–Style Cheesecake (USA): Dense, rich, and silky smooth, New York cheesecake is distinct from other varieties thanks to its cream cheese base and signature tangy-sweet flavor. Junior’s restaurant in Brooklyn popularized it in the 1950s, and it remains an American classic.
6. Japanese Cheesecake (Japan): Also known as soufflé or cotton cheesecake, this dessert is renowned for its airy, fluffy texture. Egg whites are whipped into the batter before baking in a water bath, producing a light, delicate cake that melts in the mouth.
7. Kohupiimakreem (Estonia): This simple yet delicious dessert consists of curd cheese blended with sugar, vanilla, and whipped cream. Served cold, it is often topped with raisins or fresh berries, making it a refreshing, creamy indulgence.
8. Mel i mató (Catalonia, Spain): A traditional Catalan sweet that pairs fresh mató cheese—mild and slightly grainy—with a generous drizzle of honey. It’s a minimalist dish that lets local ingredients shine while offering a perfect mix of sweet and tangy flavors.
9. Møsbrømlefse (Bodø, Norway): Originating in the Salten region, this treat is made with lefse flatbread spread with a mixture of melted goat cheese, buttermilk, and syrup. It can be eaten plain or topped with butter, sugar, or sour cream, delivering a unique balance of savory and sweet.
10. Sfakianopita (Crete, Greece): A Cretan specialty, Sfakianopita is made with thin, unleavened dough kneaded with soft local whey cheese such as mizithra. Traditionally fried or lightly baked, it is served warm and drizzled with thyme honey. With optional toppings such as sesame seeds, cinnamon, or almonds, it embodies the rustic richness of Crete’s culinary heritage.
