A new movie trailer for Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, has drawn over a million views, but many viewers may have missed a familiar face at the 1:46 mark: Greek American billionaire John Catsimatidis.

Catsimatidis, best known as the owner of the Gristedes and D’Agostino supermarket chains, makes a brief but memorable appearance. In the trailer, he discusses the price of a custom ping pong ball with Chalamet’s character, telling him, “A custom ball like that, it’s going to cost a lot of money.”

This isn’t Catsimatidis’ first time in the public eye. Beyond his business ventures—which began with his first Red Apple grocery store on the Upper West Side in the 1970s—he is also a well-known radio host on WABC and former New York City mayoral candidate of 2013.

His surprise Hollywood debut adds another fascinating chapter to the career of this prominent business and media figure.

Catsimatidis: From humble beginnings, realizes the American dream

Catsimatidis was born on the Greek island of Nisyros in 1948 and immigrated with his family to the US when he was only six months old. His career began with a humble start in the grocery business. He worked in a small grocery store while attending New York University, eventually dropping out just a few credits short of graduating to focus on his business full-time.

By the time he was 25, he had already established ten Red Apple supermarkets. His business holdings have since expanded into a diversified conglomerate, the Red Apple Group, with interests in real estate, aviation, and energy. He is the owner and CEO of the Gristedes and D’Agostino supermarket chains in Manhattan, as well as the United Refining Company. His businesses have annual sales of approximately $7 billion and employ over 8,000 people.

Catsimatidis is a well-known media personality, hosting the radio talk shows The Cats Roundtable and Cats at Night on WABC. He purchased the station in 2020. He has also been a political figure, running for the Republican nomination for mayor of New York City in 2013, where he was the runner-up. Catsimatidis has made political contributions to both Republican and Democratic campaigns.
