China opened the doors to what it called the world’s first humanoid robot games on Friday, launching a three-day international event aimed at showcasing the nation’s technological strength in robotics and artificial intelligence.
The competition brought together 280 teams from 16 countries, including the United States, Germany, and Brazil, to test the limits of machine agility, coordination, and autonomy.
The event, held in Beijing, featured humanoid robots competing in traditional sports such as track and field and table tennis, as well as tasks specifically for machines, ranging from sorting medicine and handling materials to providing cleaning services.
The goal, organizers said, was to present real-world applications for intelligent robotics, while also collecting data to support future industrial use.

Global teams compete using China-made robots
Of the participating teams, 192 were affiliated with universities and 88 represented private companies. Chinese firms such as Unitree and Fourier Intelligence were among those fielding robots, many of which were built by local manufacturers like Booster Robotics.
Robots often lost their balance and crashed into one another during football/soccer matches, drawing cheers and laughter from the audience. At one point, four machines collided mid-game and fell into a tangled heap.
Similar moments unfolded during the 1,500-meter (.93 miles) race, where a robot sprinting at full speed suddenly toppled over, prompting both gasps and applause from spectators.
Despite frequent tumbles, several robots managed to rise independently, demonstrating improvements in motion control and recovery. Human teams assisted those who couldn’t.
Max Polter, a member of the HTWK Robots football team from Leipzig University of Applied Sciences in Germany, said the event served both as a competitive space and a research opportunity.
He explained that trying new approaches in this environment was valuable, even if failures occurred during matches. Testing in real time, he noted, was better than spending large sums on prototypes that ultimately don’t work.
Public turnout highlights growing interest
Tickets for the event ranged from 128 to 580 yuan ($17.83–$80.77) and drew large crowds eager to witness the next generation of intelligent machines in action. Organizers said the football contests, in particular, were designed to enhance the robots’ ability to coordinate with others, an essential skill for factory and assembly line settings.
The robot games are part of a broader push by China to lead the global AI and robotics sector. With its aging population and ongoing tech rivalry with the United States, the country is investing billions to develop humanoid machines that can fill labor gaps and support long-term growth.
China has organized several high-profile robotics events in recent months, including a humanoid robot marathon in Beijing and opening retail outlets dedicated to robot products. According to a report by Morgan Stanley last week, public interest is growing rapidly.
Analysts noted a significant rise in attendance at a recent robot conference compared to previous years, describing it as a sign that the concept of embodied intelligence is being embraced not just by officials but by the broader Chinese public.
