Gaza is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis as more than 100 aid and rights groups warn that food, water, and medical supplies have run out, triggering mass starvation across the Palestinian territory. The groups say that Israel’s ongoing blockade and tight restrictions are largely to blame, while Israel insists it is not responsible for the shortages.

In a joint statement signed by 111 organisations, aid workers described the worsening conditions on the ground, saying families are going hungry and even humanitarian staff now wait in food lines. They warned that essential supplies have been fully exhausted, and some aid workers are growing weaker by the day due to a lack of food.

The statement accused Israel of imposing restrictions, delaying shipments, and fragmenting the aid process under its siege, leading to what the groups described as “chaos, starvation, and death.”

Aid groups warn of worsening crisis

One of the largest independent aid groups in Gaza, the Norwegian Refugee Council, said its operations have come to a complete halt. “Our last tent, our last food parcel, our last relief items have been distributed. There is nothing left,” said Jan Egeland, the organisation’s secretary general. He added that some staff members are now starving.

Aid agencies are calling on governments to pressure Israel to lift all restrictions and restore what they described as a principled, United Nations–led aid response.

Israel, which oversees all crossings into Gaza, cut off supplies entirely in March. Though the blockade was lifted in May, the Israeli government introduced new inspection measures aimed at preventing aid from reaching Hamas and other militant groups.

Israeli officials have blamed the United Nations for failing to protect aid shipments, alleging that militant factions are stealing the goods. Those groups have denied the allegations.

UN chief calls the situation a ‘horror show’

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the situation a “horror show,” warning that starvation now threatens every household in Gaza.

Palestinian health officials reported that at least 101 people, including 80 children, have died of malnutrition since the beginning of the conflict. Most of those deaths occurred in recent weeks.

Countries including the United Kingdom have sharply criticized the current aid delivery system, which both the Israeli and US governments support.

Reports from the region say Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinian civilians searching for food on several occasions. More than 800 people have reportedly been killed while attempting to reach aid centers.

As mass starvation spreads in Gaza, humanitarian organizations warn that the death toll will continue to rise without immediate changes to the aid process.
