Astronomers are examining a possible first-ever recorded impact on Saturn after a bright flash was captured in a photo taken by NASA collaborator Mario Rana on July 5. The observation, made during a routine planetary watch, has been reported to the Planetary Virtual Observatory and Laboratory (PVOL) for further investigation.
The image shows a faint but sudden burst of light on the left side of Saturn, resembling impact flashes previously observed on Jupiter. While such collisions are not unusual in the outer solar system, capturing one in real-time is exceptionally rare—especially on Saturn. If confirmed, this would mark the first time an impact on Saturn has ever been recorded.
Gas giants don’t leave lasting evidence
Saturn, like Jupiter, is a gas giant. Because of their massive size, these planets are more likely to be struck by asteroids or other space debris. However, unlike rocky planets such as Earth or Mars, Saturn doesn’t retain visible craters or lasting scars.
Its outer layers, made mostly of hydrogen and helium, absorb and erase signs of impact quickly. This makes real-time observations, like Rana’s, especially valuable.
Studies show large impacts are rare
Researchers have long struggled to estimate the frequency of such collisions. One recent study suggested that large impacts by objects over one kilometer in diameter happen on Saturn roughly once every 3,125 years. Smaller impacts are believed to occur more frequently, though they are harder to detect.

Data from NASA’s Cassini mission revealed that some of these smaller events may create temporary ripples in Saturn’s rings, serving as indirect evidence of past collisions.
Cassini data reveals hidden activity
In 2013, Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, noted that the rate of small impacts on Saturn appears to be similar to that on Earth, despite their very different locations in the solar system.
She credited Saturn’s expansive rings—100 times larger than Earth’s surface area—for acting as a kind of natural meteoroid detector.
Software and community help hunt impacts
Rana is a contributor to DeTeCt, a global project that uses software to scan video observations of Jupiter and Saturn for the quick flashes caused by potential impacts.
The project relies on amateur astronomers worldwide, who use home telescopes and share their recordings to help scientists identify and verify these rare events.
Global call for verification footage
To date, no one has directly witnessed an object striking Saturn. That could now change. The faint flash recorded by Rana may be the first such observation—if confirmed.
Marc Delcroix, affiliated with PVOL, reviewed the footage and described the flash as brief and faint. According to PVOL, the event likely occurred between 09:00 and 09:15 UTC on July 5. The organization is now calling on astronomers worldwide to check their recordings from that timeframe.
Astronomers who observed Saturn during that period are encouraged to contact Marc Delcroix and share their recordings. Experts believe that with astronomy growing as a hobby and the high quality of modern telescopes, there’s a good chance someone else captured the same moment, even if they haven’t realized it yet.
Scientific value may be limited
Even if the impact is confirmed, researchers say there may be limits to what can be learned from the data. Without knowing details like the object’s speed or mass, it’s hard to measure the full effect of the impact.
An ideal scenario would involve observing an object approaching Saturn in advance, similar to when the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet struck Jupiter in 1994—an event that scientists were able to study in far greater detail.
