In a chilling development that has stunned Greece, 25-year-old Eirini (Irini) Mourtzoukou has confessed to the deaths of three infants—two of whom were her own children—and the killing of her infant sister over a decade ago.
Mourtzoukou, arrested yesterday, July 8, in connection with a string of suspicious infant deaths in Amaliada in Western Greece, admitted during questioning that she was responsible for all four fatalities. Sources close to the investigation reveal her confession included disturbing details that have shocked even seasoned investigators, rapidly making this one of the most harrowing criminal investigations in recent Greek history.
Disturbing details emerge of the murder of the infants
Sources close to the investigative team reveal her confession included disturbing details that have shocked even seasoned authorities, making this one of the most disturbing criminal investigations in recent Greek memory. According to a senior homicide official speaking to Vima, Mourtzoukou’s “cold confession” stunned even the most hardened professionals.
With “incredible cynicism,” Mourtzoukou reportedly broke down and confessed to taking four lives. The first was her 18-month-old sister in February 2014, when Mourtzoukou was just fourteen years old. This crime, now reportedly time-barred, was committed out of a desire for revenge against her mother. “I killed my sister because I had a fight with my mother and I wanted to get revenge on her,” she allegedly told homicide officers, words that reportedly shocked the police.
But the horror did not stop there. Mourtzoukou, “almost unperturbed,” according to officials, also described the murders of the three infants she is accused of:
- Her first child: “I killed my first baby because I had a fight with my mother and I wanted to hurt her. I got mad and killed it,” Mourtzoukou reportedly confessed. This act, she says, was not an accident or negligence, but a conscious decision aimed at causing her mother mental pain.
- Her second child: Mourtzoukou claimed she killed her second child by crushing it while she was asleep. “I crushed my second baby in her sleep. I killed it without wanting to,” she stated. However, authorities remain unconvinced that this was indeed an accident.
- A friend’s child: Perhaps the most shocking admission concerns the child of her maid of honor. The 25-year-old confessed murderer admitted she took revenge on the friend’s boyfriend through the infant. “I killed my friend’s baby because I had a fight with her boyfriend and I wanted to get revenge on him. I took it out on the child.”
Case similar to Greek mother who murdered her children
The case is reminiscent of another series of murders that captivated Greece. Roula Pispirigou, a mother from Patra in Western Greece, was sentenced to life imprisonment in March for the killing of all three of her daughters. The 35-year-old was found guilty of the murder of Georgina, her eldest daughter, and smothering three-year-old Malena in 2019 as well as her six-month-old sister, Irida.
The judges adopted the prosecution’s proposal, and the defendant did not request any mitigation. “The defendant will not request mitigation, insists on her innocence and will appeal the decision,” said her attorney. The also accepted the prosecutor’s recommendation, who had argued for the defendant’s guilt, attributing the motive to her obsession with her husband of the time, Manos Daskalakis.
“Pispirigou drowned the children so that her marriage with Daskalakis could continue. Her egocentrism was eating away at her. She wanted to keep her husband close to her,” said the prosecutor.
