US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth recently underscored the robust and enduring defense partnership between the United States and Greece in a letter to Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias. The communication followed Dendias’ congratulatory message on Hegseth’s appointment, highlighting the ongoing commitment to strengthening US-Greece defense relations.

Hegseth emphasized that the US and Greece share a longstanding and robust defense partnership, operating both bilaterally and within the framework of NATO. He attributed the strength of this alliance to Greece’s unwavering dedication to allied priorities. This commitment is evident in several key areas:

  • Contributions to NATO missions: Greece consistently participates in and supports NATO operations, demonstrating its active role in collective security.
  • Consistent defense spending: Greece reliably exceeds NATO’s target of spending 2 percent of its GDP on defense, showcasing its serious investment in its military capabilities.
  • Strategic support for US Armed Forces: Greece provides crucial strategic support through hosting, access, and overflight rights for US forces, significantly aiding US operations in the region and beyond.

Souda Bay: A Hub of US-Greece defense ties

A key highlight of Hegseth’s letter was the acknowledgment of the pivotal role of Souda Bay Naval Base on Crete. This strategic facility is vital for supporting critical operations across multiple theaters, serving as a crucial hub for US naval and air forces in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond. Its importance has grown in recent years, particularly in light of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the wider region.

The US Defense Chief reaffirmed the Department of Defense‘s dedication to deepening cooperation with Greece. He expressed optimism about the future of the relationship, especially as Greece progresses with its participation in the F-35 fighter jet program. This acquisition represents a significant modernization of Greece’s air force and further interoperability with US and NATO forces.

The US views Greece as a critical partner in projecting stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region of increasing strategic importance due to energy interests, maritime security, and ongoing conflicts.

Greece as a model for regional security

Hegseth stressed the importance of European partners taking on greater responsibility for Europe’s defense. He specifically cited Greece, one of NATO’s oldest members, as a model for others, particularly in Southeastern Europe. Greece’s leadership in regional security initiatives and its consistent commitment to allied defense spending set a strong example. The US aims to work closely with Greece to further leverage its regional influence and explore new avenues for collaboration on security challenges.

Beyond strategic matters, Hegseth also extended his gratitude to Dendias for his message of sympathy following the tragic plane crash at Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport in January, which claimed the lives of three US service members.

He remarked that, in such times of loss, the United States finds comfort in the solidarity of its closest friends and allies, underscoring the deep personal and professional bonds that underpin the US-Greece relationship.
