The popemobile once used by Pope Francis during his 2014 visit to the Holy Land is being converted into a mobile health clinic for children in Gaza, Vatican News reported on Sunday.
Donating the specially designed “popemobile” was among the late pontiff’s final wishes. He requested that the vehicle be repurposed to aid children suffering from injuries and malnutrition amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the war-torn enclave.
The Catholic charity Caritas Jerusalem has taken charge of the project. The organization is outfitting the vehicle with medical equipment for checkups, treatment, and emergency care.
Once completed, the clinic-on-wheels will be staffed by doctors and medical personnel and deployed to areas where hospitals and clinics are no longer operating.

In a public statement, Caritas Sweden Secretary General Peter Brune called the move both practical and symbolic. “It’s not just a vehicle, it’s a message that the world has not forgotten about the children in Gaza,” he said.
The project reflects Pope Francis’s long-standing commitment to vulnerable communities and consistent calls for peace. Throughout his papacy, he urged an end to global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. His final appeal for a ceasefire came on Easter Sunday, one day before his death.
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Francis maintained close contact with Gaza through near-daily calls to the Holy Family Church—the only Catholic church in the Strip. The church had become a shelter for both Christian and Muslim families during the Israeli military operations that followed the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel by Hamas.
Pope’s final months marked by personal outreach to Gaza
During the 2023 Christmas season, the Vatican came under scrutiny after displaying a Nativity scene featuring baby Jesus wrapped in a traditional Palestinian scarf, the keffiyeh, that has become a global symbol of Palestinian solidarity. The Pope Francis-approved display was removed shortly after its installation following public criticism.

Caritas said the mobile clinic will be deployed once safe entry into Gaza is possible. It aims to reach children in remote or heavily damaged areas with limited access to healthcare.
The vehicle’s transformation from a papal diplomacy symbol into a tool for humanitarian aid underlines the late Pope’s message of compassion and action.
The College of Cardinals is scheduled to convene on Wednesday to begin the conclave that will elect Francis’s successor.
