Glarokavos Lagoon Beach, located on the Kassandra peninsula of the Halkidiki region in northern Greece, has been awarded the title of “Most Beautiful Beach in Europe” by the European Best Destinations (EBD) organization.
The ranking, based on votes from thousands of travelers worldwide, highlights destinations that combine exceptional natural beauty with cultural richness.
Described by EBD as one of “the most breathtaking beaches across Europe,” Glarokavos impressed voters with its unique landscape, turquoise waters, and tranquil surroundings, earning it the nickname “The Blue Lake of Halkidiki.”
Glarokavos Lagoon Beach in Greece is a coastal gem
Situated just a couple of miles from the popular resort town of Pefkohori, Glarokavos Beach is known for its expansive sandy shoreline mixed with pebbles near the water’s edge. Like many beaches in Halkidiki, it features crystal-clear blue waters and a peaceful setting along with pine trees that nearly touch the sea.
The beach caters to a wide variety of visitors with both organized areas containing beach bars and loungers, as well as more secluded spots for those who prefer a more peaceful and natural experience.
The iconic lagoon
At the southern end of the beach, a small lagoon adds to the area’s unique appeal. A distinctive double sandbar forms a narrow channel through which boats can access a small harbor, giving Glarokavos its “Blue Lake” identity. This rare natural formation, combined with the ever-changing hues of the sea and sky, results in a stunning visual experience for beachgoers.
Glarokavos is also family-friendly, with nearby shops, cafes, and a small theme park for children. Its accessibility—from a paved road less than two miles (3 km) from Pefkohori and approximately 63 miles (110 kilometers) from Thessaloniki—makes it a convenient destination for both local and international tourists.
With its blend of natural serenity, scenic beauty, and modern amenities, Glarokavos Lagoon Beach is a deserving recipient of its new title—and a must-visit for anyone exploring the shores of northern Greece.
Another idyllic beach of Greece is among the top 10
The eighth most breathtaking beach of Europe, according to EBD, is Assos Beach on the island of Kefalonia. It is a charming pebble beach nestled in a picturesque bay surrounded by lush greenery and the quaint village of Assos. The tranquil turquoise waters are ideal for swimming and relaxation.
Situated on the northwest coast of Kefalonia, there is limited parking available near the village, so it is best to arrive early.
The beach is in the vicinity of the village, where one can find tavernas, cafes, and restrooms. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, and the serene waters render it ideal for families.
