Athens Mayor Haris Doukas welcomed artist Georgia Lale to City Hall on Saturday and accepted her controversial pink Greek flag artwork for display.
In a symbolic move signaling support for the artist and the message behind her work, Doukas announced that the new home for the pink Greek flag will be the Athens City Hall via his Instagram account. He posted a photo receiving the piece from Lale, stating, “The pink flag will be displayed at the Athens City Hall starting today. To remind us that the fight against gender-based violence is a responsibility we all share.”
This is the latest episode in the saga that sparked widespread controversy in December 2023, when the flag was displayed at the Greek consulate of New York.
The pink Greek flag is a work of art that Lale crafted from the bedsheets of women who have suffered abuse. The artist claims it is intended as a symbol for the victims of femicide and domestic violence in Greece, an issue that has sparked widespread public debate, following a number of violent incidents of domestic abuse that led to the death of many women.
The start of the pink Greek flag controversy
Its initial exhibition at the Greek Consulate in New York in December 2023 drew sharp criticism from conservative circles in Athens, who saw this exhibition as an insult to the national flag of the country.
Dimitris Natsios, leader of the far right Niki party, brought the issue to the Greek Parliament, deeming the artwork disrespectful to the national symbol.
Responding to the political pressure, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis ordered the consulate to remove the flag. While acknowledging the importance of artistic freedom, Gerapetritis argued that a diplomatic mission was not the appropriate venue for such an exhibition, emphasizing the need to uphold the official representation of national symbols.
Despite its removal from the consulate, the pink flag reappeared in Athens in March 2024. Mayor Doukas authorized its projection onto the facade of the Athens City Hall building to mark International Women’s Day, further fueling the discussion. By that time, the pink Greek flag had become a point of ideological debate in Greece, with progressive voices supporting Lale and conservative pundits condemning it.

This act was praised by left-wing politicians and activists as a necessary symbolic statement against gender-based violence, while critics reiterated their objections to altering the national flag’s image.
The artist herself expressed regret that the artwork’s intended message – shedding light on violence against women – was overshadowed by the debate over the flag itself. She maintained that the piece was meant to honor victims, not disrespect the nation.
By accepting the physical flag for display within the City Hall of the Greek capital, Mayor Doukas has taken a firm position, displaying the artwork, using it as a symbol of a pressing issue for the modern Greek society.
