Over 1,500 dolphins were captured on drone video swimming together off the California coast in a massive ‘super pod,’ a sight that left researchers astonished. Captain Evan Brodsky of Monterey Bay Whale Watch recorded the rare event on Friday, January 24.
“They were on the horizon I feel like as far as I could see,” Brodsky said. “It just blows my mind every time. It never gets old.”
Risso’s dolphins, the species observed in the bay, typically travel in much smaller groups of 10 to 30. Seeing such a large number together is highly unusual, according to marine biologists. Experts believe several smaller pods likely merged as they moved south along the coast.
A rare and breathtaking sight
Brodsky and a small research team were aboard a 20-foot inflatable boat, initially searching for gray whales when the dolphins suddenly appeared. The marine animals surged through the waves, some soaring into the air while others surfed the boat’s wake.
Marine biologist Colleen Talty, who was on board tracking migrating gray whales, called the experience “pretty amazing.”
She described how some dolphins swam right at the front of the vessel, using the waves to propel themselves forward in a behavior known as bow riding. Others breached, slapped their tails, and leaped in unison.
“They looked like they were having a big party,” Talty said.
Why Monterey Bay attracts these dolphins
While super pods of dolphins have been recorded before, they are far from common. However, Monterey Bay offers conditions that make it an ideal location for such sightings. The region’s deep underwater canyon allows dolphins, which prefer deeper waters, to swim much closer to shore than in other parts of California.
The research team initially underestimated the scale of the pod at first, believing only a few hundred individuals were present. However, upon launching a drone, the true size of the massive dolphin pod became apparent. The footage revealed thousands of dolphins stretching across the water, moving in synchronized motion.
Face-to-Face with Dolphins
Talty recounted one unforgettable moment when she stood at the front of the boat and looked down to find several dolphins staring directly back at her. They turned on their sides, made eye contact, and then continued to glide through the water.
As the dolphins surrounded the boat, the crew remained cautious to avoid disrupting them. The team maintained a steady course to ensure the animals’ safety.
“You don’t want to make any abrasive maneuvers and potentially injure an animal,” Brodsky said. “So we just cruised along with them. It was an incredible experience.”
The rare super pod left researchers in awe, serving as a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of marine life along California’s coast.
