Archaeologists in Pompeii have revealed extraordinary finds, including lavish frescoes in a grand colonnaded hall and a decorated counter in an ancient tavern, offering vivid glimpses into Roman life.
The discoveries, which feature detailed scenes of banquets, seafood, and daily commerce, highlight the city’s artistic brilliance and social vibrancy while advancing preservation efforts at the historic site.
In Region IX, researchers uncovered an oecus, or colonnaded hall, within a large house. The space is adorned with frescoes of extraordinary quality, created in the Second Pompeian Style.
The artwork features a trompe-l’œil colonnade, a technique that creates the illusion of depth, framing vivid still-life scenes of hunting and fishing. Animals such as chickens, waterfowl, partridges, and a boar are depicted alongside baskets filled with seafood, including bluefish, squid, and shellfish.
Painted against a striking red background, the frescoes evoke the opulence of Roman banquets and underscore the importance of food in the era’s social gatherings.
Preserving Pompeii’s treasure
These artworks are part of an extensive effort to preserve Pompeii’s treasures. The site encompasses more than 13,000 spaces, including homes, public areas, and sacred buildings.
Archaeologists are stabilizing areas where excavations meet buried sections, while improving drainage systems to ensure long-term sustainability.

In Region V, another extraordinary find has captured attention: a Thermopolium, an ancient Roman version of a tavern or fast-food stand, has reopened following stabilization and excavation. The establishment is notable for its intricately decorated counter, which features frescoes of exceptional quality.
Among the artwork are images of a Nereid, a sea nymph, riding a hippocampus, and depictions of animals believed to have been prepared and sold as meals. The vibrant frescoes provide a rare glimpse into ancient Roman cuisine and the bustling daily life of commerce.
Service area at the back of establishment to store food
Excavations at the Thermopolium also revealed a service area at the back of the establishment. This space was used to store amphorae and other containers for preserving and preparing food, further highlighting the practicality of these social hubs.
Archaeologists emphasize that the Thermopolium stands out among the many similar establishments in Pompeii due to its artistic decorations and the insight it provides into ancient Roman interactions.
While the frescoes in Region IX reflect the luxury and grandeur of banquets, the Thermopolium offers a window into the dynamic exchanges of everyday life.
The discoveries underscore the enduring significance of Pompeii as a site of cultural and historical exploration. With ongoing preservation efforts, researchers aim to ensure that the city’s vast heritage continues to inspire curiosity and wonder for generations to come.
