The entertainment industry had a mixed year in 2024, with Hollywood delivering an array of great movies, and also several works that flopped.
Audiences were thrilled by the superhero spectacle Deadpool & Wolverine, charmed by the emotional depth of Inside Out 2, and captivated by the enchanting musical adaptation Wicked.
But with success failure comes too. Several Hollywood movies did not perform well and were criticized by audiences and critics alike.
Hollywood’s Biggest Flops in 2024
Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum partnered up to headline the romantic movie Fly Me to the Moon. It bowed out with a profit of just $42.4 million worldwide and failed to recoup its hefty $100 million price tag.
Borderlands was another production that flopped. The talents of sensational stars including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis failed to make a profit for the movie. According to Movieweb.com, profits reached $33 million, substantially short of the $110-120 million budget.
Touting an impressive cast led by Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sam Rockwell, the spy action comedy Argylle only managed to recoup half of its budget estimated to have been $200 million.
Biggest flop of all
The biggest flop of all is perhaps surprisingly the movie ‘Megalopolis’, directed by Francis Ford Coppola which was released in September 2024.
After a thirteen-year absence from the silver screen, Coppola returned with the sci-fi drama Megalopolis, which takes place in an alternate version of New York City known as New Rome where futuristic architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) finds himself at odds with its corrupt and conniving mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) over his grand plans to create an idealistic utopia known as Megalopolis (Great city in Greek).
According to Movieweb.com, Coppola spent $120 million of his own money to help Megalopolis get greenlit. Countless issues plagued production including the COVID-19 pandemic. Megalopolis was a massive failure, grossing just $13.7 million and receiving an underwhelming 46% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Critics slam the movie
Most of the cinema critics slammed the movie. For example, Barry Hertz of the Globe and Mail writes, “Megalopolis might be Coppola’s decades-in-the-making passion project, an epic of ambition and imagination, but it is also a magnificent mess of a masterpiece, as irredeemably silly as it is sincerely sublime.”
Maureen Lee Lenker of Entertainment Weekly gives the film an F grade, noting, “The film may be set in the future but its views on sexuality, men and women, and power are hopelessly stuck in the past.”
Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson was also critical in his review, writing, “This is the junkiest of junk-drawer movies, a slapped-together hash of Coppola’s many disparate inspirations. What really tanks the movie, though, is its datedness.”
Toronto Star critic Peter Howell also slams Megalopolis. Noting Coppola’s past glories, Howell writes, “It’s hard to believe the same brilliant director who made The Godfather, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now also birthed this monstrosity, which is wrong in so many ways, from its insipid screenplay and terrible direction to its bizarre casting.”
Meanwhile, BBC online critic Nicholas Barber, writes of Megalopolis, “It’s like listening to someone tell you about the crazy dream they had last night–and they don’t stop talking for well over two hours.”
