Angelina Jolie has been nominated for a Golden Globe for her leading role in the biopic movie Maria, premiering on Netflix this week, where she portrays Greek opera diva Maria Callas during her final days.

The nomination was announced on Monday, two days before the movie starts streaming on Netflix, on Wednesday, December 11th. The 49-year-old actress, who has already won an Academy Award for her role in Girl, Uninterrupted, has earned the Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance By A Female Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama category for her stunning performance as Maria Callas, one of the world’s greatest opera singers. This is Jolie’s 9th Golden Globe nomination.

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will be held in Los Angeles on January 5, 2025.

Maria streams on Netflix after premiers worldwide

The long-awaited biopic movie by Pablo Larrain had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2024. It was released across Greece on December 5 after being released in selected theaters across the United States on November 27. When it becomes available on Netflix on December 11 it is expected to captivate a global audience of millions.

Filming got underway in Budapest in 2023, with other filming locations including Paris, Milan, where scenes were filmed at the La Scala opera house, and Greece. Speaking at a recent interview in London, Angelina Jolie expressed her great love for Greece. “It is very special, and I think there was something very meaningful to start this film in Greece, for obvious reasons.”

Meanwhile, at the same event, Maria‘s Chilean director Pablo Larrain praised the Greek light and the  difference it made to his filmmaking, according to the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center (HFCA)—Creative Greece.

“The water, the colors, the islands in the background . . . but the light I think, as a filmmaker, lighting has a lot of meaning and I think the light in Greece, to me it’s a Greek light. This atmosphere, you cannot cheat. There’s a lot of things you can cheat in things but not the  light,” Larrain stressed.

Maria is the third, and reportedly the final film in Larrain’s trilogy of 20th century iconic women, succeeding 2016’s Jackie about Callas’s love rival Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, and 2021’s Spencer about Princess Diana.

Maria, and Jolie’s connection to the Greek diva

The film follows the Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye, reimagining the legendary diva in her final days as she reckons with her identity and life. Maria Callas, also known as “La Divina,” died of a heart attack at her Paris apartment on September 16, 1977 at the age of 53. She was cremated and her ashes were scattered in the Aegean Sea in Greece.

In a recent interview, Angelina Jolie said she has found a deep connection with the Greek diva. “There’s a loneliness that we both share,” she told the Associated Press during an interview. “That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think people can be alone and lonely sometimes, and that can be part of who they are.”
