Once again, scientists have proven Einstein’s theory of general relativity is indeed correct using a Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI).
By using the DESI to observe how dark energy and gravity behave on a large scale, scientists have concluded that gravity works exactly as Einstein predicted. The findings form a part of a study that has been taking place over the past decade focused on unlocking the secrets of dark energy, the strange force behind the ceaseless expansion of the universe.
Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity
In 1915, the world-renowned physicist Albert Einstein released a paper on his theory of general relativity. One of the seminal works in scientific history, Einstein’s findings are still humanity’s foremost description of gravity today.
Gravity is one of the primary forces that influences the behavior of the universe and everything in it. Einstein’s theory of general relativity combined space, time, and gravity as forces that interact with one another. According to the theory, concentrations of matter and mass bend space and time, affecting the movement of objects around these masses.
However, as studies have uncovered more details about the universe’s constant and rapid expansion, many scientists began to question Eintein’s groundbreaking theory.
Dragan Huterer, a University of Michigan cosmologist and co-leader of the team using the DESI dark energy instrument, said:
“Einstein’s theory of general relativity describes the motion of massive objects in a gravitational field that they create. It is one of the most successful physical theories that we have. The discovery of the accelerating universe, however, led to suggestions that maybe general relativity needs to be modified.”
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument proves Einstein correct
Just as scientists were ready to disregard the great scientist’s seminal theory, the DESI proved the genius right once again. The dark energy instrument proved that gravity works exactly as described by the theory of general relativity.
“General relativity has been very well tested at the scale of solar systems, but we also needed to test that our assumption works at much larger scales,” said Pauline Zarrouk, a cosmologist at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) who co-led the study, in a statement. “Studying the rate at which galaxies formed lets us directly test our theories and, so far, we’re lining up with what general relativity predicts at cosmological scales.”
The study also did something that has never been done before. It proved that both the theory of dark energy accelerating universal expansion and Einstein’s predictions on gravity’s behavior on larger scales are correct simultaneously.
“Our DESI data shows that it is in agreement with Einstein’s theory of gravity but still favors a dynamical dark energy—and finding these simultaneously is new,” said astrophysicist Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki of the University of Texas at Dallas and co-leader of the study.
