Greece has received a record number of U.S. students for the 2022 to 2023 academic year according to the Institute of International Education (IIE).

The number of US students who chose to study in Greece in that period increased by nearly 34 percent over the preceding year (up from 4,484 in 2021-2022 to more than 6,000 students for the 2022-2023 academic year).

Greece remains a top ten study abroad destination for US students and has attracted an increasingly large number of Americans pursuing overseas educational opportunities. It ranked 17th in 2018, which shows Greece’s trajectory to becoming a top destination for US students in recent years.

At the same time, a growing number of Greek students chose the United States for their studies, with a total of 2,561 Greek students studying in US academic institutions during the 2023-24 academic year, also marking an increase compared to the prior academic year.

“The United States is invested in Greece’s future and is proud to see our educational ties continue to expand. International education strengthens the ties between our countries, strengthens our economies, and deepens the ties between our peoples,” noted US Ambassador to Greece George J. Tsunis.

The IIE has conducted an annual statistical survey of international educational exchange activity into and out of the United States since 1948. The results of the survey have been published annually as the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange since 1955.

The Open Doors Project is sponsored by the US Department of State with funding provided by the US government and supported in its implementation by IIE.

Study in Greece program attracts US students

Greece has established the Study in Greece program to attract foreign students to study in the country. there is an urgency for Greece to be engaged with the world, to attract international students, and to bring bold, brave, and pioneering thinking to our greatest challenges through academic excellence and cutting-edge research.

“Study in Greece is a success story for us, [and] we firmly believe in what we can achieve and what we have already achieved,” Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said recently.

“This is only the beginning”, he said, adding that the institutional framework for the internationalization of Greek universities was already in place, along with instruments to facilitate this opening up.

Pierrakakis announced plans for additional institutional reforms in the coming months to deepen this policy and establish additional joint degrees and research programs and to end the state monopoly with regard to Greek state universities so as to create “a freer and better academic landscape, which will give us the potential to reach what we can achieve.”
