This metal, known as element 98 on the periodic table, was first created in 1950. It has a shiny, silver-white appearance and is soft enough to bend without breaking. Californium is not well known to most people, but its cost is staggering—around 27 million dollars for just one gram.
This makes it about 400 times more expensive than gold. The high price comes from its complex production process, which can only happen in nuclear reactors.
Californium-252 is a highly unstable form
Californium-252 (Cf-252) is a radioactive material that slowly changes into stable forms by releasing radiation. To create it, scientists use a reactor where plutonium-239 is hit with neutrons.
This process is followed by a lengthy and expensive purification to separate the californium. It requires advanced tools and highly skilled experts.
Producing Cf-252 also releases harmful particles called neutrons and alpha particles, which are extremely dangerous. Despite its high cost and complexity, the demand for Cf-252 is low. This is partly due to its short lifespan, as it decays in about two years.
This metal is prized not just for its high cost but for its important uses in industry, science, and medicine.
In nuclear reactors, it helps regulate nuclear fission, ensuring the process stays stable and safe. It is also used in the oil industry to precisely measure underground oil deposits.
Use of Cf-252 for the destruction of cancer cells
In medicine, californium-252 has a key role in cancer treatment. It is used in neutron therapy, a method that targets and destroys cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. This makes it an important tool in the fight against cancer.
Californium-252 gained global attention in 2023 during the war in Ukraine. Russia accused Ukraine of receiving radioactive materials, including californium-252, from a European Union country, alleging plans for “dirty bombs.”
Because of its extreme rarity and the dangers it poses, californium-252 is one of the most heavily monitored substances worldwide. Strict regulations govern its production and use to prevent misuse, particularly in weapons that could spread radiation.
Security around this element is critical, with handling requiring advanced skills and specialized facilities. These precautions highlight both the risks and strategic significance of this precious metal in defense and nuclear safety.
