Amazon introduced its first-ever color Kindle e-reader, the “Kindle Colorsoft.” After years of development, the company finally brought this device to the market.

Priced at $280, the Kindle Colorsoft uses special LED technology to create vibrant color displays. Other similar e-readers on Amazon are priced between $149 and $330, giving potential buyers various options.

Past efforts with eInk technology

In previous years, Amazon experimented with developing color e-readers using eInk, the same technology found in its regular Kindles. This technology is known for using minimal battery power, which helps the devices last longer.

However, those efforts didn’t succeed in producing a full-color display. Now, with the Kindle Colorsoft, Amazon is moving away from eInk to offer a more immersive color experience.

Even though it provides color, Colorsoft’s battery life will be about eight weeks, which is shorter than the three-month battery life of the latest Paperwhite model.

New Paperwhite and Kindle Scribe updates

Amazon didn’t stop at the Colorsoft. The company also introduced a new version of its popular Paperwhite e-reader. This model now features a slightly larger screen, measuring seven inches diagonally, making it two-tenths of an inch larger than the previous version.

The larger screen aims to enhance the reading experience, offering more display space without compromising portability.

In addition, Amazon unveiled an updated Kindle Scribe, which includes a unique feature allowing users to write directly on the screen using a special tool called a stylus. This tool enables users to jot down notes and ideas while reading.

The Kindle Scribe also uses artificial intelligence to convert handwritten notes into clearer, easy-to-read text. For those who like to summarize their notes, the device can also turn them into bullet points, helping readers organize information more efficiently.

Amazon’s strong market position

Amazon continues to dominate the e-reader market, holding more than 75 percent of the market share. These devices are built to last for years, and the company sells them at nearly the cost of production.

Amazon makes most of its profits through the sale of e-books and other reading materials, which users can purchase and download directly to their e-readers.

E-Reader use surged during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic further fueled the demand for e-readers. With many libraries closed due to lockdowns, people turned to wireless downloads of e-books to continue reading at home. This surge in digital reading contributed to the growing popularity of e-readers at the time.

Amazon’s Kindle devices are often discounted during sales events such as Prime Day. The Kindle Colorsoft will begin shipping to customers on October 30th, while the updated Kindle Scribe will be available starting December 4th.
