Bugonia, Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will be released in the US on November 7, 2025, Focus Features said on Tuesday.

Universal Pictures will release Bugonia internationally. The film, written by Will Tracy, follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

Lanthimos’ Bugonia based on South Korean sci-fi comedy

Bugonia sees Lanthimos leave his recent home of Searchlight Pictures, which has released many of his films, including the Oscar winners Poor Things and The Favourite as well as the upcoming Kinds of Kindness.

Emma Stone was awarded Best Actress for her role in Poor Things, which also won Best Production Design, make-up, and costume design.

Lanthimos’ latest movie is based on the South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan and produced by Sidus.

The Greek filmmaker has received multiple accolades, including a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for six Academy Awards.

Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness

His latest film Kinds of Kindness premiered at Cannes in May. The film saw Lanthimos work with key people who have always shared his vision, and he has already achieved great accomplishments with them.

Producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures have produced all of Lanthimos’ English language films, and with co-writer Efthimis Filippou, Lanthimos has collaborated on multiple Greek and English language projects, including Dog Tooth, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and The Lobster, which earned them both an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay.

In terms of the cast, this is the director’s third feature-length film with his muse Emma Stone, the two of them having collaborated in the artistic short film Bleat as well. For the new movie, they also reunite with Willem Dafoe, who, as Lanthimos states, simply loves the art of filmmaking.

Described as a triptych fable, Kinds of Kindness follows “a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.”

According to Lanthimos, the idea for the film had taken on multiple narrative forms over the years, eventually evolving into an anthology as they wrote it with Filippou.
