On Monday, the California tech giant, Google, shared its “Year in Search,” a summary of the topics most searched for globally in 2023.

These include both fun pop culture topics, such as the famous Barbenheimer, and tragic moments, including goodbyes to noteworthy people and devastating international news of international relevance.

Most searched “news” and “persons”

In 2023, the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas was the most talked-about topic worldwide, according to Google’s global data.

People were also curious about the submarine connected to the Titanic that collapsed in June and the powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February.

Google’s top trending person in searches for this year was Damar Hamlin, who is a safety with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Hamlin experienced a near-death cardiac arrest on the field during a January game. However, he made quite an impressive comeback. The public, which closely tracked his progress, was quite happy about this.

Next on the list for 2023 is actor Jeremy Renner, who survived a serious snowplow accident at the beginning of the year. On a sadder note, the late Matthew Perry and Tina Turner were the most searched-for individuals who passed away.

Most searched “movies” and “songs”

In the entertainment scene, the movie that took over Google searches this year was Barbie. Following closely was the co-pilot in Barbenheimer, Oppenheimer, and Jawan, the Indian thriller.

On the TV front, the top three trending shows in 2023 were The Last of Us, Wednesday, and Ginny and Georgia.

As for music, Yoasobi’s “アイドル (Idol)” claimed the title of Google’s top trending song in searches. Following closely were Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town,” which gained a lot of attention after controversy this past summer, and Shakira and Bizarrap’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

Most searched “recipe,” “sports team,” and “slang”

The most sought-after recipe was Bibimbap. Inter Miami CF, where Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi now plays, topped the list of trending sports teams.

In the U.S., people spent the year wondering why eggs, Taylor Swift tickets, and sriracha bottles were so pricey. Moreover, “rizz,” recently designated as Oxford’s word of the year, was a top choice for trending slang definitions.

Most searched “people” on Google in Greece

In Greece during 2023, Google searches were buzzing with names like Sin Boy (Σιν Μπόι), a standout in the rap music scene. Stefanos Kasselakis (Στέφανος Κασσελάκης), now the Syriza party leader, also garnered an overwhelming amount of attention.

Actor Odysseas Stamoulis (Οδυσσέας Σταμούλης), though internationally not as well known, was a significant figure in his own right, while MEP Alexis Georgoulis (Αλέξης Γεωργούλης) made an impact.

Moreover, Haris Doukas (Χάρης Δούκας), the mayor-elect of Athens who is also an energy policy and management professor, made it to the fifth spot for capturing the interest of the Greek public.
